Euro Paper Talk: Medical booked in as Arsenal agree £27m defender deal; Milan give up on Liverpool ace

A medical has been booked in for Wednesday as Arsenal close in on a £27m defender signing, while AC Milan won’t be signing a Liverpool star and Man Utd have made an offer to bring one of the world’s top stars to Old Trafford, according to Tuesday’s European papers.

EMERY CLOSES IN ON DEFENSIVE TARGET

Saint Etienne centre-back William Saliba is set to undergo his medical ahead of a move to Arsenal on Wednesday.

The Gunners are reported to have agreed a £27m deal with the French club a few days ago, with the French youngster set to head back to Ligue 1 on loan to gain further first-team experience.

Arsenal managed to fight off late competition from north London rivals Tottenham to land the highly-rated Saliba, who Spurs wanted to sign but were not as keen on loaning the youngster back.

Saliba enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2018-19 as he played a part in Saint Etienne having one of the best defensive records in Ligue 1.

The prospective signing will not please many Arsenal fans, however, given the club’s desperate need for new defesnive recruits to strengthen their team right away – rather than waiting another year for a young player to develop.

SARRI ROW PROMPTS MAN UTD TO TABLE RONALDO BID

Manchester United are making a fresh attempt to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to the club this summer, according to reports in Spain.

And according to Don Balon, United believe they have a good chance of landing their man, amid claims the Portuguese superstar is at loggerheads at the club over their appointment of Maurizio Sarri this summer.

They claim Ronaldo is looking for a way out of Turin after just one season, with their differences of opinion coming to the fore during Sunday’s defeat to Tottenham in Singapore when Ronaldo was subbed off during the game.

It’s also reported that Ronaldo has expressed reservations about Sarri and his wish to leave to the club’s board.

While it looks fanciful at this stage to suggest that could lead to his departure, there are few at Old Trafford who wouldn’t welcome Ronaldo’s return to the club.

Despite his advancing years, Ronaldo remains one of the world’s elite footballers and remains prolific in front of goal for both club and country.

And the report claims Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is willing to make an exception to his plan to furnish United’s side with young, hungry stars – as exemplified by the captures of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka – to get his hands on Ronaldo, with United chiefs already making contact with Juve over a potential deal.

The report claims there is also interest in the Portuguese superstar from China.

It’s also worth noting that the Daily Mail claims United are far more likely to pursue his Juve teammate Paulo Dybala, while The Times has suggested the only likely attacking arrival will be Nicolas Pepe.
