As you know, Christie’s New York is handling the upcoming sale of a significant chunk of the personal guitar collection of David Gilmour. With more than 120 guitars, including his preferred Fender models of Broadcasters, Esquires, Telecasters and Stratocasters, the auction on 20th June marks a rare opportunity for guitar aficionados, musicians and collectors to explore one of the world’s most comprehensive groupings of guitars that hooked a generation. As we noted, prior to the sale, the entire David Gilmour Collection will be on display at Christie’s London between 27th – 31st March, followed by highlights of the collection on display in Los Angeles from 7th – 11th May, and will conclude with a full preview in New York from 14th – 19th June. You can book your viewing slot for the London staging now – visit this page at Christie’s website to select your preferred time (https://a.flexbooker.com/widget/34ee144d-e3ee-4663-83b3-101464fd20a7?fbclid=IwAR2MllKSAB_jr3k5oZXI21WgMw6AQaBnXcREHn-C7iQN-u80xGpEm6WbfKI#calendar). Reservations are free of charge, but necessarily limited to reduce congestion, so don’t delay. At time of writing this, most time slots are still available, although some of the later slots each day are gone. For those unable to attend, the auction house had created an incredible virtual tour of the upcoming George Michael collection – hopefully they will create the same for David’s guitars… We have no idea if photography will be permitted at the viewing (a question we’ve had a number of times already) although if you pre-order the catalogue for The David Gilmour Guitar Collection, direct from Christies (https://catalogues.christies.com/christies-shop/Product.aspx?offerId=52694), you should have great pictures of every item on offer. The catalogues are priced at £30/$50/€45 each plus postage, and please note that catalogues will not be despatched until the week commencing 13th May, so it is unlikely to be available to purchase at the London or LA preview events.

Need Your Love So Bad – Peter Green and David Gilmour
To coincide with the upcoming publication of a new book about the guitarist who was founder of Fleetwood Mac, a version of Need Your Love So Bad, which started life as a home recorded vocal by Peter Green in 1968 using a domestic tape recorder, has just been made available with additional music played by David Gilmour. Producer Laurie Latham took the vocal track and with the full input of Gilmour created a new musical landscape for this classic blues track. Peter heard and approved of the treatment before he passed away, peacefully in his sleep, on July 25th 2020. This is one of two tracks that form part of the book project by Peter called The Albatross Man. The other track is a new version of Man of the World by Kirk Hammett from Metallica using Peter’s original famous Les Paul. The book – in three special editions, two of which include the two new songs on 7″ single – is now on pre-sale, and will be published on what would be Peters 75th birthday, October 29th 2021. Full details and ordering at rufuspublications.com (https://www.rufuspublications.com), who are the only retailers of the book, but will ship worldwide.

Hipgnosis Studio: Pink Floyd And Beyond opens tonight in Italy
Opening this evening at the Palazzo Mezzacapo, in Maiori, Salerno, Italy, is a new exhibition – Hipgnosis Studio: Pink Floyd And Beyond. The exhibition runs until 27th August celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Dark Side Of The Moon. On display will be 55 large-format works, from the band’s most iconic covers to their preparatory works and out-takes, and will tell the story of the collaboration between the Hipgnosis design studio and Pink Floyd. In an interview for the opening of the exhibition, Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell said: “I met Pink Floyd at Abbey Road studios to listen to the recordings of the new album and talk about the cover. The keyboardist, Richard Wright, asked us not to do one of our usual surrealist works, but something simpler. A week later, while reading an American physics magazine, Storm noticed a prism which, when struck by a beam of light, created a rainbow. Itâs perfect, he said. We didnât have computers and software, so I took some crayons and made a drawing. When we showed it to Pink Floyd they chose it straight away”. Po, who is a designer, photographer and director, but above all co-founder with Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis, said that the exhibition in Maiori gave “an emotional contrast between the Baroque palace and my works. I would never have thought that half a century later that prism would have been an icon: on the street you see people wearing t-shirts with that logo, itâs the first thing that struck me even when I arrived in Naples. Of course the fact that Pink Floyd sold 50 million copies of that album didn’t hurt.” The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday between 6pm – 9pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 7.30pm – 11.30pm.
