Conor Gallagher has ‘reservations’ over potential first-team role at Chelsea next season

Conor Gallagher’s standout 2021/22

Conor Gallagher would be loaned to Crystal Palace from Chelsea for the 2021/22 campaign.

The midfielder had previously spent time on loan with West Brom, but was unable to help the Baggies stave off relegation last term.

Gallagher should have no such issues at his current club, though, with Palace undergoing something of a resurgence under new boss, Patrick Viera.

The Eagles have lost just two of their 11 league games under the Frenchman and whilst they have previously struggled to pick up wins, they have now won two on the bounce.

Gallagher would be instrumental in both wins, scoring one and assisting one vs Manchester City whilst also scoring one vs Wolves.

Gallagher has now scored four and assisted two in 10 PL games this term, which is a tremendous record for a central midfielder.

Gallagher’s Chelsea reservations

Gallagher’s fine form would also see him earn his first England cap during the international break, coming on for the second half of the Three Lions’ dominant win over San Marino on Monday.

With Gallagher in such fine form, Chelsea fans are no doubt excited to see him return to their club next season and fight for a first-team place.

However, Gallagher is said to have reservations about his role in west London next year.

As per Euro Sport:

Conor Gallagher is understood to have reservations about whether he will truly get a crack at Chelsea’s first team next season

The report goes on to explain that Chelsea have hinted to Gallagher that a good season at Crystal Palace will open the door for him, but sources close to the player say he fears the Blues will still be tempted to strengthen their squad through the transfer market, which would reduce his chances of a breakthrough.

Given Chelsea’s previous track record for favouring new signings over academy stars, it is easy to see why Gallagher may be concerned, though the Londoners have turned something of a corner since Frank Lampard’s stint in the dugout
