At last I am back in Austin, and the first and second night here I saw four great bands at three of my favorite clubs, The Continental Club, The Saxon Pub and The One-2-One Bar. The clubs are all situated in South Austin, which is also my favorite area. (Photo above: Chuck Prophet)
The Continental Club had Casper Rawls at Happy Hour on Thursday. He is a guitar virtuoso and played with his band, plus Bukka Allen on keyboard. It’s a pleasure to hear such great musicians as this at an early hour with no entrance fee.
After one set with Casper Rawls I went over to The Saxon Pub on South Lamar to see Patrice Pike. I have seen her before a couple of times, and I truly like her. She plays rocky and melodic songs with a tight band. Extra percussion adds to the sound, and towards the end of the s et Patrice took over the drum set for an explosive version of Whole Lotta Love.
The last band on Thursday was The Super Drakes. The Drakes have been an Austin favorite for many years. The Super Drakes are The Drakes plus the musicians who have played in The Drakes during the years. To me who have only seen The Drakes a few times, plus, it was a great pleasure to see them.
Chuck Prophet is very fan oriented when on stage, which means that his concerts are both musically very solid, but also quite funny. He talks to the audience and dances on stage and doing many other weird things on stage.
