Chelsea in contract ‘standoff’ with star as one key issue remains

Champions League holders Chelsea are reportedly in a ‘standoff’ with defender Andreas Christensen over a new contract.

The 25-year-old has taken his game to the next level since Thomas Tuchel arrived in January. Alongside team-mate Antonio Rudiger, he has improved massively and is now one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

It is clear that Christensen is vital to Tuchel’s plans going forward. He has already made ten appearances in all competitions this campaign. The Denmark international opened his account for the season in Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Malmo last week.

The star’s current deal at Stamford Bridge expires in June. That means rival clubs can organise a pre-contract agreement with him as early as January.

Chelsea have been working hard to agree an extension. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed earlier this month that terms were close to being finalised.

However, the latest from Goal makes for worrying reading for Chelsea fans. They claim that Christensen’s representatives have not been in contact with the club for around two months.

Clearly, negotiations have stalled – and one key problem is in the player’s mind. He wants to be rewarded for his form with a significant pay rise. But the terms being offered by Chelsea do not match that valuation.

They would still make him one of the lowest earners in the first team. The report does not provide any update on when talks may resume between the two parties.

Christensen is in a similar situation to his defensive counterpart Rudiger. Talks have been held with the German but a new contract is yet to be sorted.

Rudiger is aware of interest from Bayern Munich and could use this as a bargaining tool.

Tuchel will be hoping the future of his two stars can be sorted soon. It would help to ensure their top performances continue and give him the chance to build an even better side going forward.

PSG man opens up on Chelsea transfer links

Paris Saint-Germain skipper Marquinhos has reacted to reports linking him with Chelsea.

The Brazilian was reportedly wanted by Tuchel in west London this summer. During an interview with Le Parisien, Marquinhos explained why a move failed to go ahead: “It wasn’t even an offer. In fact, the club blocked talks straight away. It shows the faith they have in me.

“It is an honour for a club like PSG to put such faith in me. The fact that others are interested in me means I am doing well.

“It gives me the motivation to go on, boost my training sessions and play even better. Paris and PSG are the only things on my mind.”

Marquinhos is aiming to lead his star-studded team to Champions League glory this term. They reached the semi-final in 2020-21 before being knocked out by Man City.
