Can’t look away: Levy has guaranteed one thing with bold Mourinho decision – opinion

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Daniel Levy has ensured one thing with his hiring of Jose Mourinho as Tottenham Hotspur manager: The Amazon documentary they are participating in is an absolute must-watch.

The club signed up to be a part of “All or Nothing” at the start of the campaign, following in the footsteps of the likes of Manchester City, Leeds United and Sunderland, who have all allowed cameras into the dressing room in recent years, for various different programmes.

It is meant to focus on the construction of the new stadium, the impact on the wider community and Spurs’ performance on the pitch but one has to feel that a fourth option has now become viable: The decision-making in the boardroom.

This is not to say that there will be a clip of Levy dispensing with Mauricio Pochettino in brutal fashion but there will certainly be the dramatic arrival of the Portuguese.

Before this, it threatened to be a bit of a bore.

Spurs endured a difficult start to the season and simply weren’t winning matches. They have recorded three Premier League victories in total thus far and are 14th ahead of the clash with West Ham United.

A 2-1 loss to Liverpool was packed with incident, while the 1-1 draw with Everton saw Andre Gomes suffer a horrific leg break and Son Heung-Min reduced to tears. Other than that, there’s the 7-2 Champions League humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich and not a lot else.

Now, though, there is spice and intrigue.

Why exactly did Levy take the decision he took? Was Pochettino as distant as reports have suggested? How did Mourinho bed himself in? How long did it take before the ex-Real Madrid manager’s demeanour changed behind the scenes?

The key to the Sunderland doc, which aired on Netflix, was the strife behind the scenes, as they suffered relegation from the Championship to League One.

There will be a similar morbid curiosity for Spurs fans, as they watch one of the most beloved managers in their history lose his job, to be replaced by a man who has previously bossed one of their biggest rivals, Chelsea, twice.

But for the rest of the world, this is pure box office, a world-class manager parachuted in to save a season that was in danger of drifting off the rails.

Whether it’s a car crash or a success, few will be able to look away.
