Beneath The Surface: POESY

Hellooo and happy Friyay one and all! It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to yet another glorious Beneath The Surface feature and one so tantalisingly close to the weekend. What. A. Treat. and boy, have I got an absolute TREAT of an artist in for you today folks. I know, I know, I am good to you, but tis the season of giving and I am feeling generous and really rather festive. So without further ado lets tuck into a festive feast of an interview, with the wondrous POESY.

What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?

I started taking piano when I was four and always enjoyed singing because of my love of Disney musicals. But in the grand scheme of wanting to be a professional musician – that all came down to me watching Queen’s performance live at Wembly. Particularly when Freddie does a 4 min long acapella intro to “Under Pressure” and has the crowd repeat after him. I loved how he was able to connect a stadium of people together as one and became obsessed with doing that myself one day.

How would you describe the music you are currently creating?

Triumphant and powerful – it’ll make you feel a LOT. But I think we all need to let ourselves feel a little more. The new music is meant to be played loud while you dance your demons away.

What does your creative process look like?

It changes depending on who I’m working with and what makes sense for the group – especially with doing so many virtual sessions now. But I always like to start with a lengthy conversation about how everyone is feeling. I’ve gone into so many sessions where I have absolutely no clue what to write about that day and then someone will say something offhand that is so intriguing we end up writing a whole song about it.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)

Lady Gaga or Miley Cyrus – let’s manifest that asap because I would implode.

What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?

Be gentle with yourselves! That’s the main message of Diamonds and I think it’s one we all really need right now. Don’t be afraid to take a step back, take a break, and do something nice for yourself. I think we all need to treat ourselves with kindness because if we do, it’s so much easier to reflect that kindness out at the world.

What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?

Listen to the music that made you fall in love with music. Whenever I’m too in my head about needing to create something “great”, I go back and listen to the songs that made me obsessed with music in my early teens. I think writer’s block is always helped by remembering the fun and focusing on that instead of feeling like you have to do something. If it feels forced, stop.

What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?

Over the last year my keyboardist Will and I have written quite the body of work. 2021 is going to be a year of releasing that and inviting people into the world of POESY. You can expect some additional singles as early as the top of the new year and also look forward to a handful of videos that will really paint the picture of where the music’s heading.

Keep up with POESY here:
