What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?
As a kid I was pretty obsessed with the BBC series “The Rock and Roll Years” and remember being glued to it every week. It was just so dense – each episode cuts together period news footage with the music from a given year from the ’50s to the ’80s. No commentary, no production, just a few subtitles and great track after great track. For me it really sparked the realisation that music can drive growth and change in society, not just respond to it.
How would you describe the music you are currently creating?
Soulful, unfiltered. Ambitious but humble.
What does your creative process look like?
Oftentimes the actual writing part of the process is the most immediate, almost like a song will jump out in front of you in real time. When I’m writing with someone else and we both feel that happening, it’s pretty cool – you look at each other like “There it is!” But from that point there’s still so much that goes into it – scoring out the orchestral parts, bringing in collaborators who all have something amazing to contribute, hearing it grow into a finished arrangement..
Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)
What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?
It’s going to be a journey – sit back and enjoy.
What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?
It’s been an incredibly difficult time for a lot of people in music, and I think one thing that has challenged artists and musicians is keeping the creative flow going without having the outlet of performance. Another thing that we’ve suffered a lack of is the inspiration of travelling even short distances. But I do feel any small way you can shake up your surroundings and bring in new sights, smells, sounds and textures can help that creative spark. It might be something you can change at home like moving your furniture around, or a routine, like walking somewhere you’d normally get to by bus.
What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?
I’m so excited about the next few months and seeing Peak Futures’ debut album come out, hopefully alongside a general lifting of the collective mood and leaving the pandemic behind us. Beyond that I’ve got some amazing fellow travellers that I’m collaborating with on their upcoming projects. And, meanwhile, I’m beginning to lay the groundwork for album number 2!
