Beneath the Surface: Nora Lilith

Welcome friends and happy Tuesday, it gives me great pleasure to introduce you all to another bitesized music morsel in the form of our beloved Beneath The Surface feature. Today’s guest is the wonderful Nora Lilith. We have a beautiful chat about all things regarding her artistry. So sit back, relax and let’s get stuck in!

What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?

I think my interest in music just came from my intuitive drive to sing. I can’t remember any external sources that were a catalyst for me, it was a very sensory experience for me. That urge to sing came from deep within me, and it brought me a lot of joy.

How would you describe the music you are currently creating?

I have trouble with this. I think i’m still in a stage where I’m constantly re-defining myself and my music, and really still exploring what sounds and tones feel right to me at this time. I usually add terms like DIY and Lo-Fi when describing my project, because my music isn’t at all highly engineered or methodological. I’m curious about chill jazzy grooves, trip hop, techno, textures and foley, and intimate sultry vocals, so I guess these are elements of how I interpret what I’m going for.

What does your creative process look like?

This is ever changing, and also really depends on the track. In general I’ve been spending more time just jamming with myself (playing keys and singing) and starting off that way,  but this is actually really new to me. Over the past several years I mostly started in Ableton, usually with  a beat, and added my vocals in after having already created a general atmosphere. I think i’m slowly transitioning into doing it the other way around, where I’m  starting with my voice and creating the instrumentals around that. I think this helps me connect with my vocal expression more, because it gives my voice more freedom. It’s also a much more intimate experience, and singing for me is really a way to create that intimacy and deep sense of connection with myself.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)

Ooo Abra for sure! She was basically one of my first introductions to a female vocalist/performer who also produced her own music, and as a woman who was just starting to produce this really inspired me. Abra is also so ballsy with her creative choices and does some of the strangest things I’ve heard, and in a way where she uses areas that she doesn’t have as much expertise in as opportunities to be more experimental and unconventional. I relate to this and also strive for it simultaneously.

What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?

I’m grateful for any and all support, and especially thankful for others who are patient with me as I keep discovering myself along this path!

What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?

Well there’s not really one way, but I think for starters its important to be compassionate towards yourself if you’re feeling stuck. I don’t think any progress can be made without that initial forgiveness for where you’re at. And then i try to focus  on my roots in music, my spark,  which for me is singing, and really rekindle that connection to that piece of me. It also helps me to listen to artists that inspire me, especially if i’m able to be compassionate towards myself it usually kickstarts some creative urges in me.

What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?

These next couple months I’m in the process of rolling out this project which consists of another single and some videos, and then an EP in the fall! I’m excited for these tracks to come out, and I definitely already have more songs lined up for after that as well. 🙂
