Welcome back to another Beneath The Surface edition! Today I am joined by the quirky, cool and uber talented British-Vietnamese alt-pop artist HONGZA on the day of his newest release ‘Dream Sleep Eat’. We chat ALL things music below so grab a brew & snuggle up for this wholesome lil number.
What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?
It started really young, I always thought guitars were so cool! When I was 5-6 Busted / Drake & Josh sparked my dream of being a rockstar. As I grew up I feel in love with Guns N Roses and I even got a top hat so I could be slash.
How would you describe the music you are currently creating?
My music I currently make is Alt Pop / Indie Rock. The guitar tones are inspired by dream-pop & shoegaze bands from the 90’s like Ride & My Bloody Valentine. I would say lyrically it’s quite emo.
What does your creative process look like?
It really depends it always switches. Sometimes I write by myself with my laptop, some days I write in a rehearsal studio with my band or it will be in a session with a couple producers. It really helps being able to mix and match as it gives the music some variety in terms of tones and energy.
Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)
Beabadoobee!!!! She is honestly so cool! She’s makes Guitar music, I make guitar music, she’s makes quite emo tunes, I make kinda emo tunes & we’re both from South East Asia! I would love to do a tour with her and represent British South East Asian artists.
What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?
Hongza family if you’re reading this you guys rock, I love you so much! You guys are honestly making this slowly come true & you’ve been so supportive. Shout out to the day 1’s that always show up to the TikTok streams. What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?
Try write with other people, I’ve always found it great working with other writers & producers because you bounce off each other with ideas and words!
What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?
My debut EP Gen Z is coming in May and It’s something I’m super proud to release! It’s a coming of age sound track that goes through the topics of toxic social media culture, online dating, finding your feet through love, friends, family & coming to terms with your identity. I’ve got some live shows that I’ll be announcing soon too & then another EP.
