Beneath The Surface: Heartdestroyer

Hey friends, welcome back to another delectable Beneath the Surface Slice. Today I am joined by the enigma that is Heartdestroyer off the back of new single ‘Hello Kitty Bitches’. We go IN on all of Heartdestroyers influences and dive deep into what makes this unique and exciting artist tick. Tuen in below!

What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?

Blink 182. Nine Inch Nails later on. But definitely Blink 182 as a little kid. Haha. I’ve own a Tom DeLonge surf green fender stratocaster since I was a child.

Lately my biggest music influences have been kets4eki, Charli XCX, britney spears, 100 gecs, team mekano, christina aguilera, sienna sleep, S3RL, the gorillaz, the killers, yabujin, odetari, asht0nn, g0r3c0r3, MIMIDEATH, alice longyu gao, elyotto, alice dj, oliver tree, i9bonsai, and much more

I think most of my influences for Heartdestroyer are non-musical though. Anime, film, video games, internet culture, online experiences, real life experiences. The music was just the soundtrack for me as I experience this.

I am an Otaku, some people would call me a NEET or a Hikikomori or a weeb. I spend a lot of time alone on the internet. Always have.

Yume Nikki, the videogame, is a source of inspiration for me. So is the 3 anime Welcome to the NHK, FLCL and Serial Experiments Lain

For other video games, DOOM, counter-strike, half life, pokemon, earthbound. I don’t know hundreds of games really. I’ve had a steam account since 2003 (it launched in 2003).

Other influences include Aqua, Skrillex, S3RL, Prozzäk, Basshunter, SOPHIE, Purity Filter, Trash Vampire / Jennifer. Daniel lopatin / oneohtrixpoint never with his release eccojams vol. 1 under Chuck person is genius work that revolutionized music and Macintosh plus too.

This song is probably the most influential song for me:

the sped up version of this song is what made me really want to start making electronic music back in 2022. I have only produced for just over a year now. :p

How would you describe the music you are currently creating?

the genres would be: hexD, digicore, happy hardcore, house, pop, hyperpop, chiptune and others. nightcore is another genre that you could label the song I made, although its not nightcore, because its original lyrics, its not a remix, but definitely i take influence from those remixes in that genre

I’d describe it as fun, loud, silly, poppy, haunting, corrupted, nostalgic and energetic.

What does your creative process look like?

I don’t know. I don’t have one. I just make or I don’t make

Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)

Yabujin, Team Mekano, Sienna Sleep, kets4eki, Odetari, asht0nn, g0r3c0r3, MIMIDEATH, really anyone I listed as an influence.

I heard this artist the other day called ily and the song was My Mother Wants Me Dead. This song has recently really inspired me. I would love to work with ily. Same with Sophie Meiers, Juliana Chahayed, and Sophie Powers

It’s crazy to even suggest this but anyone involved with Selena Gomez, Arianna Grande, Eminem, Blink 182, Playboy Carti, Bladee, Yung Lean, Oliver Tree. I think it would work. Could you imagine any of these artists making a bitcrushed song in this style? I think it would be do really well. Charli XCX would also be so cool.

What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?

Take it easy. Don’t take life so seriously. We can laugh away the pain 🙂

What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?

Sleep. Get a lot of sleep. Personally I need a lot of alone time. A lot of alone time. I cannot create music when I am around others for too long. It interferes with my thought process

What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?

More music of course! I am dropping a 3rd song not too far in the future. I’ve dropped two tracks within a week of eachother and this train isn’t even at full steam yet. Lets fucking gooooooo
