Album Review: FEVER 333 – ‘WRONG GENERATION’

On October 23, FEVER 333 released their new EP, WRONG GENERATION. These eight songs were all written over the course of eight days. The first track, “BITE BACK” opens with a strong, catchy riff before launching into a fast rap filled with lyrics talking of the social injustices that have filled America not only in 2020, but since our country’s inception. In the second verse, the line “I wanna be there when the final racist statue falls,” inspires a sense of hope, that, one day, all the racist symbols ingrained in our country’s culture will be removed from their pedestal. “BLOCK IS ON FIRE” starts with a bouncy beat with a more hip-hop sound throughout the song. Sampling “Carry It” by Travis Barker featuring Tom Morello, RZA, and Raekwon, the EP’s title track contains the anthemic line, “you f*cked with the wrong generation.” “U WANTED A FIGHT” is a heavy song perfect to bang your head to. Lyrics like “power to the people, take a knee while chanting ‘I can’t breathe’” perfectly describe the widespread protests that have been happening since May, capturing the anger and other emotions that have filled these spaces.

Opening with powerful gang vocals reminiscent of a chant, “WALK THROUGH THE FIRE” manages to translate that chant into a repeated chorus that sounds exactly like what you’d expect from FEVER 333. “FOR THE RECORD” features Water Delgado of Rotting Out, is definitely a hardcore punk song. The next track, “LAST TIME,” is a slow song, focusing on the sound of keys mixed with the skill of Jason Aalon Butler’s voice. The lyrics are almost begging and plaintive, saying “you let us down for the last time.” The lines “right here where we stand, is right where we belong. From three-fifths a man to a million men strong,” give me chills every time I hear them. Though different from the rest of the EP, “LAST TIME” would still sound beautiful played live in front of a huge stadium full of fans. The softness of the song flows well into the slow introduction of the final track, “SUPREMACY.” Released back in June, this song samples the melody of “Rapture” by Blondie. The repeated verse at the end of the EP leaves you thinking hard about its words: “when time turns into history, the story that we’ll tell will be, when we were marching for our lives, you stood on the other side.”

My one complaint about this EP is that it’s just too short. Only one song is over three minutes long, and all eight songs only last under 20 minutes altogether. Regardless of its length, this EP brings up conversations that need to be had. FEVER 333 have always been a band that is outspoken about their views and their message, never shying away from what needs to be said, and WRONG GENERATION is no different.
