Warren Gatland reveals captain candidates for Lions 2021 tour

Former Wales boss Warren Gatland has revealed the leading players who could captain the British & Irish Lions against South Africa in 2021.

Speaking on the BBC’s Rugby Union Weekly podcast , he named Alun Wyn Jones, Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje as potential captains in 2021.

“There’s obvious people who come to mind. Alun Wyn if he’s fit, he’s 34 now, he becomes another Paul O’Connell if he can keep his body together, I’ve got a lot of time for Owen Farrell as a player and as a leader,” said Gatland.

“Maro [Itoje], he could in another couple of years with maturity and stuff … you’ve seen the young buck who was chasing around doing everything, now there’s a bit of control in his game.

“He could be a good captain but you can’t guarantee he’s going to be the best player on the tour so you might end up going for someone else. If you look at the second row, it’s pretty competitive.”
