A very happy birthday to Nick Mason!

All of us here at Brain Damage offer our very best wishes to Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who celebrates the very special occasion of his 80th birthday today (January 27th). We all hope you are going to have a fantastic day, Nick! The cornerstone of the band, he had his first drum kit at the tender age of 13. A member of Pink Floyd since the earliest iterations, he is the only one to have appeared on every one of their albums. Thanks to his late father Bill, he has been a petrol head from a young boy, and cars have been – and remain – one of his major passions in life. His most recent book, Passion for Speed (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/passion-for-speed-nick-mason-and-mark-hales-2.html), is worth checking out, as is the DVD of the same name (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/dvds-and-videos/passion-for-speed-ferrari-enzo-dvd-nick-mason-and-mark-2.html) focusing on his Ferrari Enzo car (with Nick heavily involved). Of course, for those who haven’t read it, Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/inside-out-2011-edition-updated-paperback-nick-mason-2.html) is an absolutely essential read, and available in a variety of editions: hardback, paperback and an audiobook, which is read by Nick himself… Nick has contributed to a number of magazines on motoring issues over the years (including a fascinating monthly column in Octane Magazine), and also became president of the Guild of Motoring Writers. He is a trustee of the Beaulieu National Motor Museum, and a life member and Guardian of the BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club). He has been involved in motor racing since the early 1970s and has entered Le Mans five times. Musically, of course, the big news over the last few years was the launch of his new band, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets. The four initial, small gigs in May 2018 held in London lead to a very successful and critically acclaimed European tour in September. This was followed, of course, in 2019 with dates in the US, Canada, and more dates in the UK and Europe. 2020 saw the release of the superb London Roundhouse concert film on audio and video formats, and was due to see the band play more shows. Sadly, the pandemic put the halt on any such plans for 2020 and 2021, but the band were back with a bang in 2022 and 2023! This year, Nick and the band will be back on tour, with six dates in Italy, and one in Germany, announced so far – click here to see all the 2024 gigs as it stands (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2024/index.php) – and we suspect there are plans for other shows too. Obviously, we’ll let you know as and when we get any further dates through. Many happy returns, Nick, and see you on the road!

Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets – Rome added to Italy 2024 dates

Some more news for our friends in Italy – Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets have just announced the date and venue of the Rome concert. They revealed back in December that they would be performing in the city, but there were no further details. Details of the dates and venues of ALL the Italian shows are below. Tickets for the newly announced show in Rome, at Cavea, Auditorium Parco Della Musica on July 21st, go on sale TOMORROW (Tuesday, January 23rd) at 11am local time (10am UK), through TicketOne (https://www.ticketone.it/artist/nick-mason/) and we anticipate that they will sell very quickly. Obviously, should further dates be announced for elsewhere, we’ll let you know – so there’s NO need to email us asking if they’ll be playing in your local town or city, or have any plans to play particular countries. We get asked this an awful lot. If it’s not showing below, we have no idea! We also don’t yet know if there will be any changes to the set list, or anything else. Due to the incredible reaction that Echoes received over the last couple of years, it is likely (although not guaranteed, of course) that they will include this during the show. We’ll all have to wait and see what they decide to play! Here are the dates, with the venue (and revised date) for Rome now included: 18 July – Teatro Arcimboldi, Milan, Italy (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2024/july-18th-teatro-arcimboldi-milan-italy.html) – TICKETS (https://www.ticketone.it/artist/nick-mason/)

Festival date in Germany added for Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets

Some hopefully great news for those of you in or near Germany – Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets have expanded their summer tour this year with a performance at the Herzberg Festival at Breitenbach am Herzberg, Germany (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2024/july-28th-herzberg-festival-breitenbach-am-herzberg-ge.html). It’s quite a large festival, running since 1968 and this year, runs from 25th – 28th July, with Nick and the gang appearing on the final day – 28th July (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2024/july-28th-herzberg-festival-breitenbach-am-herzberg-ge.html). Tickets for the festival are now on sale through burgherzberg-shop.de/c/ticket (https://www.burgherzberg-shop.de/c/ticket), although it looks like you can’t buy individual day tickets for the event. UPDATE: a single day ticket for the 28th – the day that Nick and his Saucers are playing – has now been added to the ticket store! We are still waiting to hear about the Rome, Italy gig which was included in the announcement for the dates in that country, but without the venue or ticket link being available. We’re also hoping that there will be other dates added but, as with Rome, once we have any information we will let you know.

Happy Christmas; visit Nick Mason’s home, and Hipgnosis documentary now on Netflix!

Well, it’s that time of year when would like to take this opportunity to thank you all so much for your support and kindness – the site is done purely for you, and as the current version of the site alone approaches 100 million visitors (with the previous version of the site reaching an additional 21 million visitor), we look forward to continuing to bring you news and information from the Floydian world! Whatever your plans for Christmas, the Holidays, and the New Year we hope you have a peaceful, happy and healthy time, and here’s to 2024! Roger Waters has finished tour his striking This Is Not A Drill, for now at least, and as he mentioned at the Palladium in October, he has written his memoirs. Will we see those next year – and will he release any new material, a live recording from the TINAD tour, or even perform more shows? As we now know, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets head out on the road again after such a superb 2022/2023 tour, with six dates just announced for July 2024, in Italy. Hopefully there will be some gigs elsewhere too! As for David Gilmour, there’s just been a number of pictures posted of him in a studio, which bodes well for the potential of something from him. And, as we know from previous years, there’s also often the odd surprise here and there as well, so who knows – it could be another busy year! Talking of Nick Mason – he is hosting another open weekend at his home in Corsham, Wiltshire, to raise vital funds for The Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust and Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Being held on Saturday 8th June & Sunday 9th June, the day offers a fabulous day out for the whole family: gardens to meander through, Nick’s outstanding classic and super cars on show, farm animals to visit, live music (NOT Nick playing though!), children’s entertainment, face painting, a bouncy castle plus more, a fantastic array of stalls to browse and shop – such as plant stalls, clothing, homeware, local food and wine products, a selection of food stalls from BBQ to Smoked Salmon. Tea, coffee and cakes are available throughout the day. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on leads. Tickets for this can be bought through this link (https://events.liveit.io/the-wiltshire-bobby-van-trust/middlewick-house-open-garden-2024/), now. They tend to sell out so we urge you to buy them soon to avoid disappointment. For those near the Leicester area of England, the UK’s National Space Centre (which is located in the city) is hosting the fulldome planetarium show of The Dark Side Of The Moon, on January 20th, 2024. With full 360 degree visuals, and the latest audio remastering being used, it promises to be a great evening. Tickets for the two performances that evening (7pm and 8:30pm) can be bought through this direct link (https://www.spacecentre.co.uk/whats-on/pink-floyds-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-january-2024/) which also gives more information about the event, along with pictures of how it might look. Finally, there’s an item interest which should help you tick away the moments that make up what may otherwise be dull days over the holiday period! It does rely on you having access to Netflix though. The through this link (https://www.netflix.com/browse?jbv=81721595).

Pink Floyd The Wall poster in #ILoveLive3 fundraiser

In its 25th year, Stagehand, the original live event production workers charity, is running the third of its Christmas fundraisers, #ILoveLive3. This year’s campaign recognises the immense challenges faced by the live event production industry and aims to provide crucial support to UK-based touring and festival crews dealing with serious physical or mental ill health. As ever, the fundraiser includes items from big names in music, from signed set lists to drum skins. Jonathan Higgs, frontman of art rock band Everything Everything, emphasised the crucial role crew members play in touring activities, stating, “Our crew are a vital part of our touring activities; we couldn’t do it without them. I’d encourage all live music fans to get involved and give back to the people behind the scenes.” Lighting Designer Tom Campbell of MIRRAD, who has worked with an array of high-profile bands, said that “research has found that touring professionals are 5-10 times more likely than the general population to experience mental health challenges, facing industry-specific challenges such as irregular sleep patterns, performance pressures, and demanding travel schedules: all of which contribute to the vulnerability of touring personnel to serious mental health issues.” #ILoveLive3 runs through Crowdfunder with tickets priced at £5 to remain accessible to all music fans. The prize draw is scheduled for Friday, January 5th 2024, when winners will be announced. Entries will close on Friday, December 22nd. The Pink Floyd poster in this prize draw is an original The Wall poster that was designed by cartoonist and illustrator Gerald Scarfe for the release of the band’s iconic 1979 album of the same name. Since 1979, the poster has been the personal property of the band’s one-time live sound engineer Bryan Grant, who has now kindly donated it to the Stagehand fundraiser. Bryan was the Managing Director of the legendary company, Britannia Row Productions, the live sound rental business which was founded by Pink Floyd. You can buy your entry tickets for the next three days, through this direct link at Crowdfunder.co.uk (https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/win-original-pink-floyd-the-wall-poster#start). Good luck!

New book: Phil Manzanera memoir (with PF/David Gilmour coverage) being published

The incredible musician, songwriter and record producer Phil Manzanera has now announced his memoir, Revolucion to Roxy. The book features over 100 black white, and colour, photographs looking at his times and adventures with not only Roxy Music but Pink Floyd and David Gilmour, Heroes del Silencio, and much more. There’s apparently a lot to interest Floyd fans in the book, with a chapter devoted to ‘The Gilmour Years’. Manzanera met Gilmour when Phil was still at Dulwich College. Phil’s brother Eugen was at Cambridge University and met David at gigs. Much later, Manzanera co-produced Gilmour’s 2006 album On an Island, and played in Gilmour’s band for tours in Europe and North America. Manzanera also co-wrote One Slip from 1987’s A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, played on the Rattle That Lock album, and helped bring together the pieces of music which eventually became Pink Floyd’s final album, The Endless River, which he was also co-producer for. Phil: “I’ve written this memoir for my English and Colombian family, dear friends and music fans, who have followed my musical twists and turns for over half a century. We all have different memories of the same events, and these stories are my stories. It’s a memoir that spans my 50’s childhood in Cuba, Hawaii and Venezuela, when everything seemed in the brightest technicolor, to grey but very cool ’60’s London and the start of a music career that continues to enrich my life, some 50 years later. Roxy Music is an important part of the story and I will be forever thankful to the doors it opened for me to a global world of music and musical collaborations. But I hope you’ll find my family history every bit as fascinating as my music adventures, I’m proud to be related to a Colombian pirate, a spy and and an Italian opera musician.” The book is available in a variety of editions; there’s a signed special limited edition book in a clamshell case with a 10 track CD including five unreleased tracks, a Bug Eyes sleep mask, and a Gibson Guitars Firebird V11 guitar badge. This can be ordered from AwayWithMedia.com (https://www.awaywithmedia.com/buy-books/phil-manzanera) for delivery in January 2024. Alternatively, you can buy a more standard hardback, paperback, or Amazon Kindle eBook, through the following links – these are all published in March. Pink Floyd 1973 live recordings on streaming services

Over the last couple of years, and in what could be almost seen as a bit of a Christmas present to the fans, Pink Floyd have quietly released a number of 1973 live recordings on the various streaming services, such as Spotify (https://www.spotify.com), Apple Music (https://music.apple.com), YouTube Music (https://music.youtube.com), Amazon Music (https://music.amazon.co.uk) and also the band’s official YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/pinkfloyd). The quality is rather variable – by the very nature of the unofficial, audience recordings – but the shows give a fascinating look at the concerts performed at the time of release of The Dark Side Of The Moon. The 1973 recordings released are listed with dates and venues as per the original bootlegs, and show as: – March 6th: Kiel Opera House, St Louis
– March 7th: Chicago International Amphitheatre

– March 11th: Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto
– March 14th: Boston Music Hall
– March 17th: Radio City Music Hall, New York
– May 18th: Earls Court, London

– June 28th: Sportatorium Hollywood Florida
– October 12th: Olympiahalle Munich

Our thanks to those who emailed to let us know about these.

Roger Waters concludes his 2022/2023 tour

Well, that’s it – for now, at least. Roger Waters has now completed his 2022/2023 This Is Not A Drill tour, with his show in Quito, Ecuador, with the South American dates concluding the 56 shows this year, which joined the 43 last year. The majority of the dates were performed “in the round”, which Roger and his band in the centre of auditoriums, with Roger occasionally visiting the different “arms” of the stage structure during the show. For the final, stadium shows, a more conventional staging was employed due to the nature of the venues. To answer those who HAVEN’T yet emailed us to ask, there aren’t any dates currently confirmed for 2024, or any other confirmed activity for Roger. There has been talk about him recording another album, and for those who went to, or heard about, the London Palladium shows in October (which presented his Redux version of The Dark Side Of The Moon) he has been writing his memoirs. He read out three sections on the first night, covering life in Cambridge, Syd Barrett, and a friendly duck… There are no details of when the book will appear but obviously we will let you know once we have details. We’re also waiting to hear if there will be a live album/video from the tour released at some point. Again, once we have the confirmed information, we’ll let you know. If any of you went to ANY of the shows over the last two years, and would like to share your views on them, please get in touch. We’d love to include your contributions!

On The (Ski) Run – limited edition Pink Floyd Dark Side skis created

With the Northern Hemisphere ski season just beginning in a number of countries, a new, officially licensed set of skis – which have gone on sale today – will bring the Dark Side to all that white stuff on the slopes! IcelanticSkis (https://www.icelanticskis.com/blogs/one-degree-blog/icelantic-x-pink-floyd-collab) have created their Limited Edition Icelantic X Pink Floyd Nomad 105 collaboration – and the skis look great. Icelantic note that the skis “feature George Hardie and British design group Hipgnosis’ original sketches on the tails, and the now iconic prism/colour beam image on the tips of Icelantic’s top-selling freeride tool, the Nomad 105. Our Design Director has re-imagined the beams to reflect off the edges of the skis and cascade toward each other, creating a relationship between concept and final artwork.” As you’ll see from the video below, the skis are handmade (in Denver, Colorado, USA) and come with a three year warranty. They come in five lengths and can be ordered now. However, as they are a limited edition, if you DO want to snap up a pair, we suggest you don’t leave it too long!
