Very rare Syd Barrett gig poster in upcoming auction

Warren Dosanjh, a school friend of Syd Barrett, and the manager of the early Barrett band Those Without, is selling some of his framed and glazed posters and other ephemera through the Cambridge based auction house Cheffins. Cheffins Auctions were the people who sold Barrett’s possessions after his death, on behalf of his family, so it is no real surprise they are being used again. The auction is being held this Thursday, October 26th, under the sale title Art and Design October 2023. You can view the details of each of the lots, on page 50-51 of Cheffins catalogue for this auction, which can be viewed through this link (https://edition.pagesuite.com/html5/reader/production/default.aspx?pubname=&edid=0c6fef7f-3de9-410d-be7e-077c9c75883b) or by clicking the thumbnail of the auction pages below: Most of the items are from exhibitions to do with Syd, held after his death. The first is a City Wakes poster (from the Syd celebration in Cambridge) signed by Storm Thorgerson and Rosemary Breen (Syd’s sister), together with assorted ephemera relating to the exhibition, a facsimile poster of the BBC Cambridgeshire and Anglia Ruskin University invitation to the unveiling of a Blue Plaque in memory of Syd; a Royal Mail Syd Barrett first day cover, numbered 658 of 3000; a copy of Melody Maker from August 1967 featuring Syd on the cover and other Syd related ephemera. There’s a VIP invitation poster for ‘Syd Barrett: A Celebration’ at the Cambridge Corn Exchange from October 2016 , featuring an unveiling of public commemorative art followed by a celebratory concert and music from Men on the Border together with the Sandviken Symphony Orchestra and lights by Peter Wynne-Willson, interpreting the music of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd, at the venue where Barrett performed his last ever concert in 1972. There’s a Royal Mail limited edition, numbered giclée print of the Wish You Were Here stamp, and a poster from the Their Mortal Remains exhibition in Rome, Italy. The most unusual lot though is from a gig at the Cambridge Corn Exchange that Syd played in with a support band, The Last Minute Put Together Boogie Band. This comes with a live recording CD of the band which had Syd on guitar, and a CD of Hawkwind on the same evening. Potentially this is the only remaining example of this poster in existence. We suspect the estimate of £500-1000 will be shown to be very pessimistic…

Pink Floyd’s A Great Day For Freedom 2022

Looking online, and going by some of the emails we’ve received here at Brain Damage, there seems to be a bit of confusion in some quarters over the credits for A Great Day For Freedom 2022, the new version on the physical, 7″ and CD single release of Pink Floyd’s Hey Hey Rise Up (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/pink-floyds-hey-hey-7-and-cd-single-out-today.html), which has been released to raise funds for Ukraine Humanitarian Relief. We’ve had it confirmed by Pink Floyd management that the credits on the single are 100% correct. The piano was re-done, the main synth was from David Gilmour’s original demo, and the backing vocalists were added on to replace the orchestra. For those who haven’t seen them yet, here are the credits:
– David Gilmour: Vocals, guitars, keyboards
– Nick Mason: Drums
– Richard Wright: Keyboards
– Sam Brown, Claudia Fontaine, Durga McBroom: Backing vocals We hope this information helps clarify what the situation is with this new version of A Great Day For Freedom, in particular, the personnel on it.

Animals Reimagined – A Tribute To Pink Floyd out next month

Following on from the successful June release of Still Wish You Were Here, a project that gathered various classic, prog and art rock musicians together to cover that album, the people behind it have brought together a similar mix of musicians to cover Pink Floyd’s 1977 album, Animals. Animals Reimagined – A Tribute To Pink Floyd is set for release on November 19th, 2021, on both CD and digital with a vinyl version coming in 2022. The previous album, Still Wish You Were Here – whilst dividing the Floyd fanbase – got a number of plaudits for its approach to the music, and with its success it is no surprise that another of the Floyd’s albums would undergo the same treatment. As before, a fairly diverse line-up can be heard on the album, with the likes of jazz-rock guitarist Al Di Meola, psych-rock godfather Arthur Brown, world renowned drummer and percussionist Carmine Appice, UFO’s Vinnie Moore, Bauhaus’s David J, Dream Theater’s James LaBrie, the legend that is Rick Wakeman, and Rainbow vocalist Graham Bonnet all coming together to give their unique flavour to this magnum opus. For a taster, you can hear their version of Dogs, a 17-minute version sung by Rainbow’s Graham Bonnet with Vinnie Moore on guitar, Utopia’s Kasim Sulton on bass, Dream Theater’s Jordan Rudess on keyboards, and King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto. Click here for your choice of streaming service to hear Dogs (https://orcd.co/graham_bonnet_vinnie_moore_dogs). Arthur Brown (best known for his band The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, and their UK and US hit single Fire) gives a particularly spirited performance on Sheep, which if you know Arthur, won’t come as much of a surprise! Here’s the track list, with the names of the musicians playing on each of them: Pigs On A Wing 1 – Nick van Eede (Cutting Crew) & Martin Barre (Jethro Tull)
Dogs – Graham Bonnet (Rainbow), Vinnie Moore (UFO), Kasim Sulton (Utopia), Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) & Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson)
Pigs (Three Different Ones) – James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Al Di Meola, Joe Bouchard (Blue Öyster Cult), Patrick Moraz (The Moody Blues) & Billy Cobham (Mahavishnu Orchestra)
Sheep – Arthur Brown, Rick Wakeman (Yes), Jan Akkerman (Focus), David J. (Bauhaus) & Carmine Appice (Cactus/Vanilla Fudge)
Pigs On A Wing 2 – Jon Davison (lead vocalist for Yes), Albert Lee & Billy Sherwood (Yes) If this has intrigued you, orders are now being taken through the following links, which help us out with the ongoing running costs of Brain Damage without costing you a thing – and we really appreciate the help! The album will be available on CD in a 6-panel deluxe digipak, digitally as MP3 files, and a vinyl LP is coming next year (but not yet available to order). NEW MUSIC: Ollie West & The Wildflowers – Shelf Life

The size of a really, really, really small symphony orchestra, Ollie West & The Wildflowers is an intriguing 14-piece band (excluding Ollie). Having grown up with the music of The Beatles and Billy Joel, Ollie West has a background in rock and roll; however, he chose to take combine these early influences with classical elements …

Syd Barrett: The Summer Of Love performance in Stockholm this year

Back in October 2016, 'Syd Barrett: A Celebration', a concert organised by Cambridge Live in conjunction with the Barrett family and estate, took place at the site of Syd's last ever public performance (archive/syd-barrett-a-celebration-cambridge-memorial-unveiling-and-co.html). The Corn Exchange in Cambridge was also the location chosen for a commemorative artwork, unveiled at a VIP reception before the sold-out concert in front of Syd's family, friends, and the remaining members of Stars, the band who Syd played with at his final performance at the venue. The very enjoyable – and for some, quite emotional – concert featured Swedish band Men on the Border backed by the 50-piece Sandviken Symphony Orchestra who hail from the same town in Sweden as the band. MotB covered a wide range of Barrett songs, with some dramatic and unexpected symphonic interpretations on offer. The concert also featured narration from acclaimed playwright, and former school friend of Syd, David Gale, and suitably psychedelic lighting – not just on the stage, but covering the walls, ceilings and even some of us in the audience that night – by lighting designer Peter Wynne-Willson, who was responsible for the Floyd's early light shows between 1966 and December 1967.MotB and the Sandviken Symphony Orchestra plan to repeat this successful evening, with a show at Berwaldhallen in Stockholm, Sweden, on November 14th 2020. As a special guest, there will also be guitarist Janne Schaffer, best known for his collaborations with ABBA, and his comprehensive solo career. I loaned Barrett my amp when Pink Floyd played in Stockholm in 1967, so I'm really looking forward to honouring him at Berwaldhallen, where Pink Floyd were presented with the Polar Prize. Syd Barrett: The Summer of Love is based on Barrett's life before, during and after his time in Pink Floyd, and is narrated by playwright David Gale, a childhood friend of Syd's and flat-mate when they both moved from Cambridge to London in the mid-1960s. Peter Wynne Willson will transport his liquid light show from London to Stockholm to illuminate Berwaldhallen, adding to the atmosphere.Tickets are scheduled to go on sale on August 21st, at 10am CET, through Berwaldhallen.se (http://www.berwaldhallen.se/), with the hopes that the COVID-19 restrictions will have been lifted by then. The final decision will be taken ahead of the ticket release in August, and sensibly the organisers have an alternative concert date in spring, 2021, also reserved just in case.

UK’s Prog Magazine celebrates 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s The Wall

available worldwide online (https://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/Prog-Print-Back-Issues/prog-issue-105/?listtype=list searchparam=prog) is the new issue (issue 105, January 2020) of the UK’s Prog Magazine. Always a decent read, this month’s issue has three features in particular of interest to Pink Floyd fans. First, there’s a two-page look at Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets, and in particular, the band’s UK and Ireland tour this year. With comments from Nick and guitarist Lee Harris, it finds the band missing the stage, and looking forward to being back on it in the spring when the dates resume. The main feature is a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s epic double album The Wall in a ten-page feature. They talked to Nick Mason, Bob Ezrin, Gerald Scarfe, and Bob Geldof about how the album evolved into a live extravaganza, a movie and how it pretty much broke the band. It’s a lively, and fascinating, look at this wide-ranging project. The Wall feature is followed by a two-page interview with the Floyd’s Creative Director Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, and Andy Jackson, long-time collaborator with the band who mixed and produced much of the music on The Later Years. There’s also brand new and exclusive interviews with Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Marillion, Sons Of Apollo, The Flower Kings, Edison’s Children, Kaprekar’s Constant, Nightmare Scenario, The Blackheart Orchestra, American Tears, Field Music, Lee Abraham Music and more… Plus there’s the results of the 2019 Readers’ Poll (with Nick Mason in the top ten drummers, and the Saucers in the top ten event category), and a look at 50 years of the legendary Friars Aylesbury venue. And music from Oak, The Dave Foster Band, Stuckfish, Moonshot Band and more on the CD. If your local store doesn’t stock this magazine, you can get a copy, shipped anywhere in the world, through this direct link (https://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/Prog-Print-Back-Issues/prog-issue-105/?listtype=list searchparam=prog).
