SXSW 2019 – Saturday with Hayes Carll, Ben Dickey, The Iguanas and more

Ben Dickey 16032019-02The last day of SXSW 2019 I spent seeing the excellent film Nothing Stays The Same in the afternoon, before walking over to South Congress and the Bloodshot Records party behind The Yard Dog. Saturday on South Congress is almost a separate festival in its own right with live music on almost every spot between Austin Motel and Oltorf. The main venues are the parking lot behind Jo’s Coffee, Continental Club with Mojo’s Mayhem, Guero’s garden, the back yard at the Yard Dog and Lucy’s Fried Chicken. This year I stayed at The yard Dog, seeing  Churchwood and Jon Langford, but all these venues are worth visiting,  with live bands from noon to 7-8 PM.

After a dinner at Guero’s, I went over to the Continental Club and stayed there the rest of the evening. I always experience a little fatigue on Saturday, after seeing bands and going to seminars every day and night for more than a week. And the bands at the Continental Club are usually all to my liking, both  bands and artists I have seen before, and also the new ones, so it was an easy choice.  This year I saw  Angie McMahon, Ben Dickey, Hayes Carll and The Iguanas.

The Restored. Re-Edited. Remixed. Delicate Sound of Thunder being released

Those of you fortunate enough to have the Floyd’s Later Years box set will already know just how good the 2020 version (Restored. Re-Edited. Remixed.) of Delicate Sound of Thunder is. This was a result of going directly to the more than 100 cans of original 35mm negatives, painstakingly restoring and transferring the footage to 4K. It was then completely re-edited by Benny Trickett under the creative direction of Aubrey Powell/Hipgnosis. Similarly, the sound was completely remixed from the original multitrack tapes by longtime Floyd engineer Andy Jackson with David Gilmour, assisted by Damon Iddins. Suffice it to say that in the home setting, the quality is quite incredible and the new edit is great! The visual softness of the original VHS release is long gone, thank goodness, and this is as sharp and detailed as you could ever want, with vibrant colours, really showing off the visual aspect of the presentation. Those who HAVEN’T got the box set, get ready for November 20th, 2020, when a stand-alone release of Delicate Sound will be made available, in some very nice sounding editions. You’ll be able to get hold of this on Blu-ray, DVD, 2CD, 3-disc 180-gram heavyweight vinyl and as a deluxe 4-disc edition with bonus tracks. All editions feature 24-page photo booklets, with the 4-disc box edition including a 40-page photo booklet, tour poster and postcards. The 3LP 180-gram vinyl set includes 9 songs not included on the 1988 release of the album, while the 2CD includes 8 tracks more than its original release. Richard Wright ‘Wet Dream’ reissue with Steven Wilson remix release details (updated)

Some great news has been announced this afternoon, following some online rumours and speculation – Richard Wright’s debut solo album, Wet Dream, is to be reissued on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1978 – this time in deep blue transparent marbled vinyl. It will also be available on streaming platforms for the first time ever including a new Dolby Atmos mix, on CD and on blu-ray which includes a 5.1 mix and never before released personal images and videos from around this period of his life. To be released on July 28th – the date that would have been his 80th birthday – it will initially be made available on CD and all streaming platforms, with the vinyl and blu-ray editions of the record being released on September 29th. Remixed by Steven Wilson, this reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard’s children and managers of his estate. As per the original release, the bi-fold sleeve folds out to extend the image and features the same vibrant colour palette. This time, the unidentified person in bright red shorts is swimming within deep blue waters of the sea rather than a pool and the image expands out to reveal a boat slightly out of their reach, referencing the nautical theme of the record. The image was taken by Costas Spathis, a photographer living and working in Greece, which is where the album was written and the graphic design is by Carl Glover. The original artwork was designed by Storm Thorgerson and photographed by Audrey Powell for Hipgnosis and features in the vinyl booklet. Upon rediscovering this record, it becomes hugely apparent how much of Richard’s DNA runs through Pink Floyd. His distinct rhythm patterns, song structure and style of play exudes throughout, shining a light on his unique talent and influence on modern music. When originally released, post Pink Floyd’s Animals (1977) and shortly before 1979’s The Wall, Wet Dream was largely under-appreciated. Steven Wilson’s mix is designed to give new life to the record demonstrating Wright’s brilliance. Richard wrote and produced the whole album himself and it was one of only three albums he released outside of Pink Floyd, the others being Broken China, from 1996, and Identity, released in 1983 under the guise of Zee, a duet with Dave Harris from Fashion. The Blu-ray edition of Wet Dream includes the Dolby Atmos mIx, a 5.1 surround mix (DTS-HD Master Audio 96/24), the new stereo mix in Hi-Res Audio (96/24), and exclusive personal videos along with a photo gallery. It’s housed in a book format with four collectable postcards and an 8-page booklet. UPDATE: due to feedback on the contents of the Blu-ray, it has been expanded to also include a flat transfer of the original pre-master of the 1978 stereo mix, taken from the analogue reels, as well as Steven Wilson’s 2023 instrumental stereo mixes of the four vocal tracks on the album being added. Another new song from Gilmour, Waters guitarist Chester Kamen

We recently told you about some new music from respected guitarist Chester Kamen (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/new-music-from-gilmour-waters-guitarist-chester-kamen.html). Amongst many other artists, Chester has toured with Roger Waters, joining his band in 2002 and playing on subsequent tours, and with David Gilmour on his 2016 Rattle That Lock tour. He first played with David back in 1985 during the Live Aid show – David and Chester were both part of Bryan Ferry’s band for that show (as was Jon Carin). Chester has, like many musicians, kept himself busy whilst lockdowns and restrictions due to Covid-19 have called a halt to many things – in particular, live performance. In October, he shared his recently finished new piece of music called Take This, that runs for over 23 minutes. Chester told us that Take This is the first side of an album he is currently working on – following, or inspired by, the old Floyd blueprint of one long piece and several songs on the flip side. Last month saw the first of the songs on the second side of the album: Brand New Day. Chester has now uploaded the next track on the album to YouTube. It’s called Swimming and features an appearance on bass by Felix Howard, who is Roy Harper’s son. Chester tells us that “this one is a bit darker, reflecting my state of mind at that time.” We’ll update you as he progresses with the rest of the album, as we know that a good number of you are enjoying the songs revealed so far!
