Who: Thor Jensen

Where: The Knickerbocker Music Center, Rhode Island

When: March 23, 2019

Thor Jensen played his album release show to a packed house at The Knickerbocker Music Center accompanied by Nick Anderson on drums and Ari Folman-Cohen on bass. Together, they delivered a performance that was equal parts soulful, technical, and exciting.

Thor’s unique blend of swinging blues-rock and technical Django guitar gives his music a feel that is simultaneously nostalgic and innovative. All three band members displayed their musical prowess through sprawling individual solos and cohesive full-band sections.

They played each track off the 5 song EP ‘I’ll Be Alright’ and unveiled brand new music—including their finale titled “It Doesn’t Matter,” a wild, thumping song Thor wrote only days before the show. Considerate in all aspects of his craft, Thor curated a setlist that took the audience on a nuanced journey with swinging blues and crooning melodies.

Starting off with the quick grooving “Shake Your Hips,” Thor instantly had the crowd on their feet.  Three songs later, he slowed things down with the contemplative track “Quite A Feeling,” which delivers a reflection on the thrill of life as a touring musician and remorse for leaving a loved one behind for the pursuit of dreams. The spirit of this song is best captured in the solo that slinks through highs and lows with a glass slide.

The entire setlist demonstrated not only the range of Thor’s songwriting but the band’s collective musical abilities as well. Originally from the area, Thor Jensen delivered a memorable homecoming show on a legendary blues stage.
