FEATURE: Jamaica hoping to bring cool running rugby to 2020 Olympics


Rugby players from a Caribbean island better known for Bob Marley and sprinting are now aiming to feature at the next Olympics.

Jamaica’s men’s and women’s sevens teams are hoping to earn the right to showcase their brand of cool running rugby at the 2020 Tokyo games.

The men’s squad, made up of players based in Britain and in Jamaica, has already made history by becoming the first Caribbean side to play sevens rugby at a world cup and Commonwealth Games.

Players hope qualification for the Olympic rugby sevens tournament will inspire youngsters who might never have thought of trying rugby.

“Of course, English rugby has had players with West Indian links – Jason Robinson, for example, has a Jamaican heritage,” said full-back Conan Osborne, who is based in London and has played for Richmond.

“And we have players based in England who are professionals and playing a good standard of rugby

“But if a Jamaican team could play rugby at the Olympics, I think that would be a huge statement.”

They also have received a major boost by announcing a two-year technical sponsorship with renowned global sporting apparel manufacturer, BLK Sport.

Supporters merchandise capturing the spirit of Jamaican rugby will also be available. “BLK are really excited to partner with one of the most iconic sporting countries with global appeal. We look forward to supporting the national teams and helping to grow local rugby in Jamaica” said Jason Lax, Managing Director of BLK UK.

Jamaica Rugby Board Member, Walter-J Davis said: “The players and staff at Jamaica Rugby look forward to this partnership with BLK. The high product specification and great design capability that BLK offer were qualities that inspired us.”

The official kit launch is set to take place in Kingston, Jamaica later this year.
